A balanced view on Cecil John Rhodes
Cecil John Rhodes should stay right where he is. History shouldn’t be obliterated by destroying or moving statues of even the greatest villains. Rather let us learn from the mistakes they made and let their statues be a reminder of how not to go about changing the world.
Justice Albie Sachs has an even better idea: Make CJR sweat by making him gaze forever at how a civilised nation makes work of correcting injustice and strides forward in spite of it.
I just love Sachs’ piece in City Press of 29 March 2015. Read it here.
